Her Story Unveiled Photo Project

The Challenge

Her Story Unveiled (HSU) is a non-profit founded to share remarkable stories of women from a plethora of diverse backgrounds. As the primary photographer, I was tasked with creating unique images to accompany each of the articles that they wrote. These photos had to showcase both the women and their unique talent, skill, or occupation.

The Solution

For each assignment I spent time talking to each of the subjects and had them take me through the process of what they do. In addition to taking portraits of the subjects, I explored the connection they had with their specific trade through close-up shots with a shallow depth of field.

Lighting also played a major role in the photographic style I built as I used it to guide the viewer's eye through each composition. For some images I used silhouettes to create more minimalist and dramatic images. In instances where subjects did not wish to include their face in the images I used silhouettes and double exposures to create unique images that represented the subjects while respecting their wishes.

To make the images stand out and convey the feeling of hope that HSU aimed to achieve with the articles, I made it a mission to take images with rich and saturated colors. Often times I was able to accomplish this by photographing elements of the environment such as instruments, tools, and ingredients that were part of the stories I was attempting to tell.

The Result

The articles published on HSU's instagram and social media heavily incorporated the images taken and were viewed by thousands of people. The graphic designers responsible for putting together each article's visuals were able to build a style around the images and use that to develop HSU's brand identity.
